The first five years of rugs made by Sigrun Lara Shanko

First high end magazine Elle Interiör 2012

These first five years since I started designing and making the rugs have been just wonderful.  Full of wonder and support from people who believed in my art and last but not least working for and with great clientele.  At first the rugs where made under the name Elivogar ehf but after 2013 under Shanko Rugs.

The first time the rugs were exhibited they were  spotted by the high-end design magazine ELLE Interiör and the rug “Leap” was featured in their May issue of 2012.  At the same venue, DesignMarch 2012, the rugs where also noticed by the world’s trend authority ” wgsn.com “.  WGSN chose the rugs as one of the top 10 trend design of the show.   “öö-was-it-a-dream Authentic Luxury”  in Helsinki invited to exhibit the rugs that same spring.  And then the ball started rolling.

Today the high-end Shanko Rugs are sought after for their luxury hand made touch and the unique design.

DesignMarch Reykjavik

“Sleipnir” at the DesignMarch Reykjavik 2016

Invited by Syrusson DesignHouse to show my latest creation “Sleipnir” at their stand at Hafnarhus Reykjavik Art Museum at the DesignMarch 2016.

This time I decided to look for inspiration in our heritage and chose the eight legged horse “Sleipnir” that belonged to Odin the Norse god.  I desited to dig deeper and did some research on Viking fibulas and other jewlery.  The outcome was this purple rug “Sleipnir” in solid colour of purple with heavy cutting and finishing by hand as usual.

Following photos show the work progress leading leading up to the DesignMarch.

A wing from a fallen angel or

shankorugs-fallen-angel-72-300

” A wing of a fallen angel” This is beginning of a new rug with working title  or is it a form of something else.. only time will tell.  In the mean time it is my pure enjoyment to see it to come to life on the frame.  The colours will be in the shade from blackish grey to greyish white and as always I am working with the rare Icelandic wool.  But is this a fallen angel ?
