Snaefellsjokull Glacier by Shanko Rugs

Snaefellsjokull glacier

Wonderful challenge a commissioned work ” Snaefellsjokull glacier in Iceland.  This glacier can be seen from Reykjavik when you look to the north west across the sea.  It is situated at the Snaefellsnes penninsula and is famous for being the entrance to the centre of the earth in the movie with the title Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne.

The wall space is 5 meters and the work ended up being 3.35 meters long instead of 3 meters but that was fine with the owners and I knew the wall space could take that too.  After streching the canvas I marked out guidlines for the size of the work and started placing white colour here and there to get a feel for the size.. and quickily the work grew and took on it’s own character… I wanted to show the glacier as it is in fall when it is start snowing again or in spring when the snow is melting.  When I was happy with the work I called the owners and they gave me the thumbs up so I cut it down from the frame.  With this work I decided to hand cut with scissors the whole thing as it was for a wall it could do with a little ruggedness.   In the end it was mounted on quality palywood for easy haning of the art rug Snaefellnesjokull glacier.

Rope Lava

The rug Rope Lava

This rug is 2 cm thick and then cut down to make a 3D effect in lava.  Here it is photographed at the Glacier Lagoon Jokulasarlon at Vatnajokul National Park.  This formation of lava called rope or pahoehoe lava can be seen in many places in Iceland.

Hand sculping the rug with scissors is very time consuming using different size of scissors to get the required 3D effect.  The colours used are slate grey, black, dark red, red, orange and yellow

The size of the Rope lava is ca. 90 cm x 90 cm

Work for Florence Design Week 2015

It was wonderful surprise to be contacted by the representatives from Florence Design Week in January last.  Such an honour to be invited to take part in this prestigious event in on of the most beautiful city.

The work that will be exhibited in Florence must be at the edge of design.  And that is how the lava fall was born a rug inspired by molting lava falling from a hight of 12 meters.  This piece is only two meters high falling from a wall to be spread onto the floor forward ca. 90 cm.  LavaFall-72-300I thought this piece needed some support and decided to make a twin work to go with it.  What I chose to do is a glacier.  Not surprising as most of our volcanos are under glaciers.
