The first five years of rugs made by Sigrun Lara Shanko

First high end magazine Elle Interiör 2012

These first five years since I started designing and making the rugs have been just wonderful.  Full of wonder and support from people who believed in my art and last but not least working for and with great clientele.  At first the rugs where made under the name Elivogar ehf but after 2013 under Shanko Rugs.

The first time the rugs were exhibited they were  spotted by the high-end design magazine ELLE Interiör and the rug “Leap” was featured in their May issue of 2012.  At the same venue, DesignMarch 2012, the rugs where also noticed by the world’s trend authority ” wgsn.com “.  WGSN chose the rugs as one of the top 10 trend design of the show.   “öö-was-it-a-dream Authentic Luxury”  in Helsinki invited to exhibit the rugs that same spring.  And then the ball started rolling.

Today the high-end Shanko Rugs are sought after for their luxury hand made touch and the unique design.

Snaefellsjokull Glacier by Shanko Rugs

Snaefellsjokull glacier

Wonderful challenge a commissioned work ” Snaefellsjokull glacier in Iceland.  This glacier can be seen from Reykjavik when you look to the north west across the sea.  It is situated at the Snaefellsnes penninsula and is famous for being the entrance to the centre of the earth in the movie with the title Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne.

The wall space is 5 meters and the work ended up being 3.35 meters long instead of 3 meters but that was fine with the owners and I knew the wall space could take that too.  After streching the canvas I marked out guidlines for the size of the work and started placing white colour here and there to get a feel for the size.. and quickily the work grew and took on it’s own character… I wanted to show the glacier as it is in fall when it is start snowing again or in spring when the snow is melting.  When I was happy with the work I called the owners and they gave me the thumbs up so I cut it down from the frame.  With this work I decided to hand cut with scissors the whole thing as it was for a wall it could do with a little ruggedness.   In the end it was mounted on quality palywood for easy haning of the art rug Snaefellnesjokull glacier.

The new rug Dragon Lava or in Icelandic Drekahraun photosession at Reynisfjara in s-Iceland.  This beautiful place is the perfect backdrop for the rugs.  Here the Dragon Lava rug is photographed with Reynisdrangar in the background.  We had to be there quite early to beat the tourists.  We nearly did that however the 10 people enjoying the black lava beach were not in our way so everything went by the book and we finished the photoshoot on time.

RunesDone-72-300

The first project in 2015 is “Runes in Rug” with text written in runes or Fuþark (named after the first 6 letters in the rune row). This is my sketch of a standing stone similar to the magnificent stones left by the Vikings and can be seen all over Scandinavia, specially Norway, Sveden and Denmark.

Rendezvous with Rugs

This summer I had the pleasure of three young artist from the Ball State University visiting me.  They were working on a project that required them to travel to Iceland in an exploration of conciousness and sustainability.

They were very keen to learn all about the rugs and the Icelandic wool and why it is important for me to use the wool produced here in Iceland.  We had fun and to answer their inquisitive questions was my pleasure.  However I will enclose a link to their blog about the visit.  The blog is under the title Rendevouz with Rugs
